RE: [Philmont]: bugs?

In 2001 we had very little issue with bugs. One evening in Greenwood Canyon
just before a rain shower we were attacked by flies, but that was about it.

In 2003 I had heard from two Advisors that went in June that the mosquitoes
were very bad, one was on a north trek, the other a south trek. By the time
we were there in mid July mosquitoes were a problem at Phillips and when we
stopped at Clear Creek the next day. Did not have much of a bug issue
anywhere else.

My belief is that bugs generally are not much of an issue, but weather
conditions can change that so be a good scout and be prepared.

I've never had any problem with DEET harming my hiking or paddling clothes.
A few of our crew members last year were surprised to learn that it would
remove the markings off of Nalgene bottles.
