I have worn contact on 3 treks (84, 00, & 02). In 84 they were a PAIN (AOSept - if you know what that is). In 2000 & 2002, I wore extended wear disposable lenses and loved them. We were at the ranch during the fire in 2002. Lots of smoke and ash in the air, but I still didn't have any problems.
I keep an "eye kit" in a zippered eye case. I keep my contact lens holder, an extra pair of lenses, and my glasses in this kit. I also carry 3 ounces of Renu in a sqeeze bottle kept with smellables. I usually pull the contacts out every other night, unless they are dry from the wind.
I could get by without the glasses. In the AM, I rinse my hands with a little Renu, then just pop the lenses in. I don't need a mirror for applying the lenses, so I don't carry one.
If you are careful, you shouldn't have any problems.

Subject: [Philmont]: Contacts
I'm curious about how other contact lens wearers that have previously trekked to Philmont, prepared/coped with wearing contacts on the trail. I do not have a back up pair of glasses, so I'm looking for suggestions and/or helpful hints on how you kept them clean, or if you have any tricks about getting them on in the morning, etc.
Thanks,
Jim Williams
