Tom,
Our last trip I used the following info for a guide:
http://www.bsatroop62.org/Philmont%202001/2001%20Itinary%20Guide/Itinerary%20Guide%20for%202001.htm
It may not be accurate as it was from 2001 but it was very helpful. I can think of several causes of variation but it may not account for the difference you encountered. There are a lot of switchbacks and of course the trails wander about so it is difficult to get real precise. Also depending on the trek and the trails selected to get to the next camp can impact the daily mileage.
>From experience some days seemed shorter than what was laid out but other days seemed to take longer (partially the elevation changes). I worked with the scouts to prepare them for long days and explained that daily trail mileage would not be accurate.

Hello Group,
Can anyone tell me if there is a way to find out the daily mileage for an
Itinerary? Our crew will have Trek 21 this summer which list at 64 miles.
I've plotted the trek using the 2004 Itinerary Guide and used a planimeter
to determine the distances. Even with the side hikes to Baldy and Hidden
Valley, I only get 52.9 miles. I'm not sure what I'm missing, I shouldn't be
17% off with my calculations.
Thanks in advance
Yours in Scouting
