Can anyone tell me if there is a way to find out the daily mileage for an Itinerary? Our crew will have Trek 21 this summer which list at 64 miles. I've plotted the trek using the 2004 Itinerary Guide and used a planimeter to determine the distances. Even with the side hikes to Baldy and Hidden Valley, I only get 52.9 miles. I'm not sure what I'm missing, I shouldn't be 17% off with my calculations.

Day by Day mileage... A subject that I am waaaaay to familiar with!

When the treks were renumbered in 2000 AND each supposedly was reviewed for mileage, a large number of serious errors in mileage were made. (I won't bore with details, but I will say that a number of treks are still mis-classified because while the mileage has subsequently been corrected, they are still rated as "Typical" based on the errors in 2000).

When my troop had a crew going in 2001, I began to look into the daily mileage. And found, as Jeff Knoll noted, a lot of contradictory data. Over time, the gross errors from 2000 have been largely corrected. Finally, I had access to the Philmont Interactive Ranger in 2003 and used that to look at each day of each trek. That data, and the discrepancies I found, are detailed my the spreadsheet, posted at http://www.lns.cornell.edu/~seb/philmonttrekscomparison-2003.xls and elsewhere.

Trek 21 (in 2003) was one of the few where the listed mileage from all sources is consistent (and I believe accurate). By the way, my crew in 2001 did Trek 21.

The change in 2004 of Flume Canyon in place of Pueblano will add a couple miles of back and forth between those two camps for program, deal with the burros if you take them, and the campfire.
