That is correct. That is one of the reasons why you want to graph out
the profile, so you can determine the total elevation gains, and the
total elevation losses. My values are slightly different than Coop's:
I calculate using an average 2.5 mph pace, and add one hour for each
1,000 feet of gain, and 30 minutes for each 1,000 feet of loss. We are
slightly quicker because we carry lighter packs, and rarely stop for
packs-off breaks (except at the top of long climbs).

If you practice this method, and adjust it for your Crew, you will
generally be very impressed with its accuracy.
