You are absolutely correct. That is why you need to do a profile of each day's trek. It doesn't have to be exact. Hiking is not rocket science and each crew will have its own pace. Doing a Time Control Plan the night before does lots of things. It tells you when you have to get up in the morning, if you want to be at a staffed camp or at a scheduled conservation site. It should also be able to tell you how many canteens you will want filled when you leave in the morning. No use carrying two full ones if there is a good water source four miles ahead. And for most important for me, it should tell you what your day will be like; i.e. how many tough climbs you will have. I gets my head ready for what is ahead.
