> TopoUSA maps for Philmont?
I haven't been following messages too closely, but happened to read them
tonight......
I have extensively used TopoUSA, along with a Garmin eTrex for both
Philmont and my local trips. I last went in 2002, and printed out a
daily map on waterproof paper (inkjet paper that won't run when it gets
wet), using both sides of the page to limit the amount of paper I
needed. I find this a very useful program and used it to both download
waypoints to my eTrex and upload the route data at the end of the trip.
On a side note....I had just purchased a new version of TopoUSA before
the last trip. Part of the registration gave you some free downloads of
the scanned topo maps with are more accurate. I sent an email to
support and told them I was going to Philmont and that the downloaded
maps covered about a third of what I needed for the trip. The issued
credit to my account for enough sections to get the entire trip. You
can still lay your waypoints and routes on top of these maps. Very
nice. I had some border areas without coverage, and the digital maps
filled in nicely.
Note, before I get a lot of "for the boys" comments.....I used the maps
and GPS for my own use. The crew still used the Philmont maps.
Occasionally they would ask me for the UTMs and were interested in
looking at the maps I had, but these were for me.
