RE: [Philmont]: Polar Pure/Water Purifiers/Filters

My understanding is the Polar Pure (or any iodine based purifier) won't kill things like Cryptosprydia (sp?). Filtering won't kill viruses. The path to killing everything and anything is (i gather) to filter and polar pure. If things that polar pure won't kill aren't present in the water you are attempting to purify, then polar pure should be enough. Last summer we spent 9 days in canada and only used polar pure. I'm not sure what lurks in the hearts of Philmont.

I'm sure there are some real expers out there that can give more difinitive information.

thanks

Subject: [Philmont]: Polar Pure/Water Purifiers/Filters

Most likely there has been recent discussion on this - and I missed it. The 2004 Guidebook to Adventure lists 2 or 3 water purifiers/filters as necessary equipment provided by the crew (Page 16)
I have been under the impression that Polar Pure is the recommended purification process and that filters are unnecessary weight. Is there some reason that both means of purification are now needed?
Sorry if I'm bringing up a long dead topic, but will look forward to hearing from those who know the answer to this!
