When do you use your other shoes? All the time. Getting your boots off once you arrive at your campsite does a couple of things. First, if you have been hiking all day, getting your boots off gives you a chance to air and dry out your boots. It also gives your feet a break at the same time. Secondly, the campsites at Philmont really get worked over with 20,000 campers each year. Getting into a lightweight shoe lessens your impact in camp. Finally, the reason for the closed toe is protection from burns with hot substances; i.e. boiling water, branding etc.
Spending $85 for a set a sandals is a pretty hefty tab. I had a great set of moccasin boat shoes that I could slip into. Lightweight, covered toe with enough of a sole to protect your feet. Remember, your feet are what gets you there.
