I agree with Scott and not because he's the Advisor on our trek next month.

When I was in the Service eons ago I was a cook. and I can tell you that
boiling water will find it's way to your foot no matter what you are
wearing. Trying to unlace hot laces in a hurry is no picnic. Give me
something I can get off fast a so that I can put my foot in cold water. For
that matter stick your foot, shoe/boot/sandal whatever you are wearing right
in the cold water.

The water shoes that Scott and I bought for white water rafting have a
molded rubber sole and a nylon upper. that covers the foot. there is a draw
string at the back to make it snug. The weight and packability of these are
a consideration over sneakers. and the price was right $3.50.
