Yep, that is a tough haul. Lots of "up". But it is toward the end of
your trek and you'll be more accustomed to hiking at Philmont by then.

Get an early start when you depart Cito. You'll be going through Clarks
Fork, a staff camp, on the way to Tooth Ridge. Your crew can fill up on
water there. 4 quarts per person should be enough but 5 quarts per person
would be even better. If it is hot, I would opt for 5 quarts each.
Remember that each person will need to have at least one quart when you
start down toward CHQ from Tooth Ridge on your final day.

There is a spring at Schaeffers Pass but it doesn't always run, especially
during a dry summer. Check the "water board" at logistics before you
leave CHQ to see the condition of the spring, and then ask again at Clarks
Fork. In any case, the spring is slow running but it is an available
water source during some summers.

You may also want to consider eating your supper for lunch when you stop
for water at Clarks Fork. That way, you won't have to worry about having
the water needed for the evening meal. Another option is to ask the
commissary at Ute Gulch to give you an extra lunch in lieu of the supper
you would normally eat at Tooth Ridge. At one time, they would do that
but I don't know about now.
