[Philmont]: Boot Failures?

When hiking the Wind Rivers several years ago, one of my Scouts had a
brand new pair of Vasque Sundowners fall apart on the trail. Doing one
of our Appalachian Trail Death Marches in the early 90's, one of my
adult's boots fell apart - I think that one was 2 years old at the time
(memory, a fading thing....) Don't recall the brand, maybe Timberline.
And I have seen a number of Philmont trekkers through the years with
boots that were as much duct tape and string as leather. And if you
look at the Welcome Gate arch, a number of the boots hanging there are
obvious failures, not just worn out. So yes, it does happen.
