I had a pair of Vasque boots resoled last year. I had used them at Philmont
in 1996 and later worn out the tread. The new Vibram soles were glued on,
which I think is standard. The glue job on one half (the front) of one boot
failed while on a backpacking expedition in the New York Adirondacks. I
used some nylon cord to tie the sole on for the final day of mountain
climbing, putting the cord between the sole lugs, and did a better job for
the next day hike out. A boot that has been worn enough to be broken in
without catastrophic failure almost undoubtedly will finish a Philmont trek.
However, soles can come loose, seams can give way, and the connection
between the sole and the upper can give way. I bring a pair of New Balance
all-terain trail runners as camp shoes. They are cushy and feel so good
after a long day, especially if it is hot, but have a rigid enough sole that
they can be used while carrying a pack. I climbed Whiteface Mountain
wearing them.
