RE: Coleman boots
I purchased a pair of Coleman boots in 1993, and within 18 months of relatively light use (day hikes with young children) the sole of both boots split right across the ball of the foot. I haven't seen this brand for sale for several years, however.

We had a scout in 1993 "blow out" a shoe on day 5. It was a Coleman brand
hiking boot.
Duck tape saved the day. Never leave home without it.
No big deal.
