does anyone else run a Philmont "boot-camp" before their trip?
We did that in the spring of 2004 at our local council camp that had a
decent hill. One of the scouts that we took in 2002 became a ranger for
2003 and volunteered to help out.
We split into two crews and went over all the basics - even had philmont
meals. Topics demonstrated / discussed: map and compass, 1st aid, packing
tips, water purification, cooking, cleaning, etc. We also had the crew hang
bear bags.
We had great attendence (23 out of 23), mostly due to it being in our
backyard. This weekend was the 3rd of 8 shakedown hikes that we had.
If/when I get to go again, we would repeat this as it prepped scouts and
adults alike for the way things are run at philmont

The May-June issue of Scouting magazine includes a feature on "Getting
Ready for High Adventure" describing the program used by the Patriot's
Path
Council in New Jersey. In the upper right corner of page 29, there is a
photo of Al Thomson, a regular contributor to this list.
