A note on hats. I do not generally care about the style of hat if the
backpacker has sunscreena and rain gear. However, I can support the
decision to spend the money on the Outdoor Products Seattle Sombrerro. It's
goretex, very breathable and has a wid brim that protects the face and neck
against both sun and rain. The people I know who own them wear them all the
time. It's a great year-round hat for anything. It's light and foldable.
In short, if want a piece of equipment that is versatile and long-lasting,
the Seattle Sombrerro is something to consider.

Subject: RE: [Philmont]: Wearing layers
We, at least the scouts, try to go cheap. Our Troop T-shirts are coolmax
which is the first layer. Second I tell everyone to get a cheap fleece.
Most of the scouts don't need to spend the money for name brand fleece and
most by the cheap 200 weight (middle weight fleece) from where ever its on
sale. The cheap stuff works just as good but may not hold up as long, but
most of them grow out of it or lose it before it wears out. The last layer
is rain gear. I tell them to spend a little bit extra on the rain gear, but
it doesn't need to be breathable as long as it is durable. They can usually
handle a little more sweat or a lot of time we just backpack with no rain
gear, so its more for a wind proof cold weather layer. Three layers is
usually enough. If someone's always cold like my younger son, I tell them
to bring a polypro or similar long sleeve shirt as a fourth layer. We
didn't have anyone freeze last year and it got down to 32 F one morning.
Cold weather hats are optional and most didn't bring one. If its that bad,
we have hoods and summer hats. Gloves were also optional and no one needed
them. There were always pockets. If the adults want to spend some money,
then by all means, but most of the scouts in my Troop can't afford the high
tech, name brand stuff. We do a lot of cold weather camping and as long as
everyone keep eating and keeps moving there has never been a problem.

Subject: [Philmont]: Wearing layers
Philmonters....
What have been your best experiences with clothing items to wear in layers?
Obviously, quick-dry t-shirts are the norm for a backpacker's base layer.
What about 2nd and 3rd layers?
There's been mention of fleece. Sometimes fleece pull-overs can be quite
effective, but they don't exactly stop the wind. Wear a rain jacket over
the top for that purpose?
I guess the main question I have is not about the need to dress in layers as
much as what items make for the best layering when bulk in the backpack is
an issue as well. What say you?
