Duct taping your feet helps to prevent blisters. Ideally your boots
fit well and there is no rubbing. If you feel a "hot spot" or you know
ahead of time that your boots rub your feet in a certain place, you
can put some duct tape on your feet in that area to prevent direct
rubbing of your skin by your boots. But duct tape doesn't stick very
well on wet surfaces i.e. sweatty feet. So it works better if you do
this early in the day before you start hiking.

I had a pair of boots that always rubbed my heels. My morning ritual
was to put duct tape on my heels in the shape of a plus sign. Once my
heels developed calouses I didn't need it anymore.
