Back from a wet and cold weekend helping prepare this year's council
contingent crews (though the sun did come out for the closing ceremony).
Good thing the photographer from Scouting Magazine was there last year -
pictures from yesterday would have been a bust.
While there, I was told a couple things about the new maps I'd like to pass
on.
The NW map includes Greenwood Canyon and the route to Copper Park
(previously only shown on the actual USGS Baldy quad and none of the
Philmont maps.)
The NE map includes the portion of the XA Ranch that can now be crossed
while traveling between Old Camp and Seally Canyon.
Including both of those areas was a big part in the switch from three
sectionals to four quads.
The overlap between the north and south maps will be only one UTM grid.
The new quad maps will come "folded like a road map." I do not know what
that means regarding the quality of the paper that will be used.
Something I had not thought about previously is that, compared to the prior
maps, getting near the edge is a bigger issue. With the old maps, every
trek required at least two maps. Crews doing the just the South and Central
never got near the North. Those doing the North and Central were right on
the overlap with the South (Tooth Ridge) but the chance of any crew going
too far south (beyond the ridge) was virtually none. However, the chances
of a crew going off of their maps is now greater. Also, the adjoining map
may be needed for triangulation, even if a crew stays on their map.
Lastly I was given the following changes to the list of maps required for
each trek sent out with the packages in March. (I would still consider that
whole list a work in process until issues like the above are resolved.)
#01 - add NE and SW
#02 - delete NW
#06 - add NE
#07 - add NW
#09 - delete VV
#21 - add SE (noted on the List previously)
#22 - add NE
#24 - delete VV
#25 - add NE
#31 - delete SW
#35 - delete NW
I was told that even though #09 and #24 do not need the VV (since Greenwood
Canyon is on the NW) crews with those treks, like all Valle Vidal treks,
will be receiving a copy of the VV map from Philmont.
