I guess I should explain the lock step (oops!)
The lock step (rest step) is a hiking method that allows your leg
muscles to rest for a fraction of a second on each step. Here is how
its done. As your leg passes under you on each step, you lock the
knee. What this does is take your weight and puts it on your bone
structure allowing your leg muscle a fraction of a second to rest
without having to bear as much of your weight. This is best done when
hiking up hills. The best way to explain it is to see it done in
person.
Also, stepping with your whole foot. This is something I often find
myself overlooking. It is very tempting to go up hills (steeper ones)
by stepping out with the ball of your foot and pushing off. This will
tire you out more because it requires you to use more of your calf
muscle. This is where the lock step comes into play. Set your whole
foot on the ground and then push off.
