Dave, I have never heard this before?

I won't even look at the precious Philmont leather belts for fear of jinxing the trek.

Subject: [Philmont]: RE: Philmont 2004 Lessons Learned

As a guide to aiding Crews from our council who go to Philmont in the future, we developed a "Lessons Learned" document that we intend to make a part of every contingent high adventure trek. The illustrious Cooper Wright said I should share it since he figured we didn't have enough to talk about on this site now that we settled the Micro-Pur / Polar Pure controversy....

Here is the "Top 10 Lessons Learned" for our Crew. I have a greatly expanded document that edifies each of these in nauseating detail. If you would like to read the whole thing, e-mail me and I'll send it along in a Word document.

  1. Know the difference between "PRINCIPLES" and "TECHNIQUES". Techniques will vary by day, by crew, by circumstance; Principles never vary, regardless of the circumstances.

  2. Philmont doesn't "Give" you anything.

  3. Rain might dictate what you wear, but should not dictate what you do. And the corollary: Breathable, Waterproof Rain Gear is a 100% necessity.

  4. Think of the Crew First, then the Individual when setting up camp. But thinking of the Crew first can look different on different days.

  5. "Roses, Thorns, Buds & Devotionals" (RTB&D) MUST BE DONE every day, no matter what.

  6. Get out of camp early and enjoy the trail.

  7. Do your Conservation Project early on in the trek.

  8. Cooking is very easy if you do it using the "Crew 506 technique" using the bags the food comes in.

  9. Stuff happens. Don't get uptight

10.Don't compare your trek to anyone else's.

You can also read our (voluminous) entire Phil Journal for Itinerary #3 on our troop website at: http://bsatroop506.org/pdf/PhilmontJournal2004.pdf
