Be prepared. Seem like I've heard that somewhere before.
While training our crews I always remind them to listen to what their Ranger
says and that if their Ranger tells them something different than what we
did on our shakedowns that the Ranger is right. We focus a lot on making
sure that our crew members have the right equipment so that when the Ranger
goes through our packs there is little comment or time wasted. Also we
focus on things that the Ranger does not work on like setting up and
breaking camp quickly, keeping their "smellables" in a separate bag so they
are easy to find and put in the bear bag, etc. No one remembers everything
so the Ranger training is reinforcement for the stuff that was covered prior
to Philmont and covering things that we missed during training.
Crews that I have been in have always paid attention to the Ranger better
than the pay attention to the adult leaders. This year will be interesting
to see if that holds as my crew is a bunch of mostly older Venturers.

Gee, I thought it was still a good thing to be prepared. Looks like some
Rangers need to be a bit more flexible and be alert enough to tailor their
training (or review) to fit the particular crew. Their job is to be sure
that crews do things the current Philmont way for health and safety and the
preservation of the Ranch. Their own Ranger training should point out to
them that there are often crews who may actually come to Philmont
well-trained and prepared - perhaps partly as a result of members or
advisors participating in this discussion list....................
