Tent space is at a premium at Philmont campsites. You'll have a harder time
finding a flat space to accommodate a tent that large. Using smaller tents
gives you more options for placement - it's easier to find 5 or 6 small
tent spaces, than 2-3 large ones. Your ranger will not make you pack it up
and send you home because it's not a 2-man tent. But they make those
recommendations for good reason. Enjoy your trek!

We just noticed a note in the book that says you can only bring 2 man tents
to Philmont. We have Kelty Gunnison 4's, which fit 4 large teenage boys
rather well. Do they really care and what's the story? I understand about
not using bivy sacks but what kind of backpacking tents we use seems a
little over the top.
