IMHO, Roses, Thorns and Buds, combined with Spirits Soaring High are the
hidden secret of what makes Philmont so much more than just an outdoor
adventure.

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of a Crew Leader and Crew
Chaplain being the driving force behind this practice.

I had many a head-shaking moment, sitting in stunned wonder at the
beauty, depth and maturity of the observations that came out of the
darkness in our evenings sitting in the dark, chaplain with his headlamp
on the booklet. Sometimes I had to double check to be sure I was in the
same crew. Wonderful and life-changing if you do it with the
'reverence" it deserves.
