Both advisors last year had scouts in the crew. We advisors slept in the
same tent and the scouts slept with the other scouts. I had plenty of time
with my son. We're very close. However, I believe that each of the "sons"
grew more, and were more of a part of the crew when they slept with the
crew. (each crew and each scout is different) Despite that, nothing will
erase the memory of the two of us yo yoing on Baldy and sitting with each
other at the top of the Tooth as sunrise colored the ridge just before we
returned to base camp. Sharing Philmont with my son will always be one of
the highlights of my life.

My son & I shared a tent at Philmont in 02 & 03. Same for the AT in 04.
I would not do other wise if he goes again.

I wholeheartedly disagree. I had the pleasure of tenting with my father on
my 1981 trek. That trek is one of the most memorable times of my youth. My
father and I still talk about that trip. I think it was pretty special for
him, too. I have his trek journal, and he stated that my asking him to tent
with me was one of his happiest moments ever.
The decision for fathers and sons to tent together should be made by the
son, but do not just rule out fathers and sons tenting together.

Actually, no father son combos in tents makes for a better experience for
the youth

I have also been told, (Can't quote from the book) that Philmont frowns on
single hikers by themselves in a tent. Can't have it both ways. If there are
an odd number of scouts or an odd number of adults, (or a number of odd
adults), you need to have either 1 or 3 in a tent.
Thanks,

621-d5 2004 trek 4.
we brought 2 4man timberline a-frame tents for 3 scouts and 3 adults. It
worked out that way because one scout and one adult were brothers.
If it was in last year's book we must have missed it and still went out on
the trail.
