I tented with my son in '04. We were both usually tired enough that we didn't share much of our days experiences until the next day, but it was an opportunity to share in the experiences of our trip with my teenager. He got along well with the rest of the crew, and I usually only saw him at turn in time. Point is, to each his own. It worked for us, and he missed no opportunities or bonding with the rest of the crew.( or whatever the argument against is ) It also worked out because we had an odd number of youth in the crew.
