RE: [Philmont]: Co-ed/Venture complications, was 4 MAN TENTS

I have a similar situation.

We have a co-ed Venturing Crew with 2 youth females, 1 adult female advisor,
5 youth males under 18, 3 youth males 18-20, 1 male advisor. The female
advisor is no relation to anyone in the crew. The male advisor has two sons
in the crew. While there are a number of ways to look at this, the adult
advisors will both be in single tents, the two females together, and the
male youths in 4 two person tents. Since in Venturing 14-20 is "youth" it
is not a problem for one of the 18-20 year olds to tent with someone under
18 of the same sex.

In your case, assuming the husband/wife tent together or there are no
related parties, I think you are correct with your tent count. Of course,
there is always the option of a 3 man tent for the male youth that would
eliminate one single. If the mother/daughter tented together, and the two
adult males tented together, you could eliminate two of the singles.

As I understand Philmont rules, anyone 18-20 can be counted as an adult or
as a youth for the purpose of the 4 adult advisor limit rule. I have never
seen any thing as to Philmont rules about tenting, other than following YPT
guidelines.

I invite interpretation of the 1-person-in-a-tent rule with a co-ed Venture
crew. We have 5 under-18 youth, one of whom is female, a 19 y.o. "youth",
and 3 adults (2 male, 1 female). Sounds like 3 2-person tents and 3
singles. In reality, given that the female youth is daughter of the female
advisor, they can share, but one of the male advisors is the husband of the
female advisor, so it's a bit complicated. If there were no related parties
in the crew, I see no way around the 3 singles.

What are the rules on the 19 y.o.? If he were in a regular (ie. not
Venture) crew, he would be one of the adults...

I look forward to the discussion.

Thx,

M.

I have also been told, (Can't quote from the book) that Philmont frowns on
single hikers by themselves in a tent. Can't have it both ways. If there are
an odd number of scouts or an odd number of adults, (or a number of odd
adults), you need to have either 1 or 3 in a tent.

we brought 2 4man timberline a-frame tents for 3 scouts and 3 adults. It
worked out that way because one scout and one adult were brothers.

If it was in last year's book we must have missed it and still went out on
the trail.
