RE: [Philmont]: Co-ed/Venture complications, was 4 MAN TENTS

Our Venturing crew trek in 2004 had:

      1 Adult Female (over 21)
1 Adult Male (over 21, married to above female)
2 Adult Males (over 21, left their wives at home)
      2 Youth Female (age 14)
      6 Youth Male (age 14-17)

Husband and wife team tented together. If there was any "bedtime fun" they
were darn quiet about it. I, personally, think they were too tired any way
<g>! The youth females tented together, the other two adult males tented
together, the six youth males tented in three groups. Our preliminary crew
only had one youth female going (my daughter) and I was told patently by
Philmont that I COULD NOT tent with her. She would have had to tent alone
and this helped prompt her to get one of her good friends to join Venturing
and come with her to Philmont.

Our Scout troop trek in 2002 had:

      3 Adult Male (over 21)
      1 Adult Male (over 18)
      8 Youth Male

Our 19 y/o adult male had done a trek before and relished his role as a
"tweener" adult. He could hang with the kids when he felt like it (doing
program, etc), but enjoyed the priviliges of an adult (like advisor
coffee). One of the adult males tented with him. The other two adults
tented together and then the youth males tented in three groups.

Based on my small sample of leading just two treks, co-ed is the way to go.
Our crew cohesion was much better, and the youth females added a level of
maturity (sorry guys!) that we didn't see in our 2002 crew. All of the
females in our crew were thrilled to be there, knew they were lucky to be
able to go, and relished all the attention on the trail. All three of them
are talking about a trying to get another trek for 2007!

But, this is just my experience, your mileage will vary. YIS. Mike ('76,
'02 & '04)

Nope, not verboten at Philmont or at any other time in Scouting of which
I'm aware.
