Others have given you the idea of how it works, but just to add to Jason's comments, our crews hated it. I suspect that if we were using it with younger crews who were used to it, then they wouldn't have rebelled so much. We found it easier to place our slowest walker in the front and just slow down to match his pace.

I noted in a prior message that it is best that the slowest hiker (whoever it is) should always be the one setting the pace. If that pace is such that no one in the crew needs to / wants to caterpillar, then no one calls for it and you continue on your way. In that case I'm not sure where any "rebellion" would come from.
