RE: [Philmont]: Turkey bag cooking

MessageWe also broke a bag one day, by using two pots we did not have extra
water. Also on the day we had mashed potatoes we used two turkey bags.
First we mixed the potatoes and pulled the bag out of the pot and set it
aside to steam. Then we mixed the dinner.

On the first two days out our Ranger asked us how we planned to cook. We
told him that we planned to cook with Turkey bags. He let us cook our meals
with Turkey bags from day 1, but he still instructed us on the Philmont
method.

BTW I miss-typed, we carried 4 wooden clothes pins. Also we carried 14
Turkey bags.

Our approach was similar but we used just 1 pot. We lined the pot with
the turkey bag and boiled the water in it directly. When boiling, we poured
in the food and stirred til done. We also poured a couple cups of water in
the bottom of the pot before putting the turkey bag in. This provided for
enough clean water to wash dishes after the meal.

One caution. As you stir the food as it is reconstituting, be careful to
not cut a hole in the bag. We had one case where we put a small hole in the
bottom of the bag causing it to split wide open and we ended up with a meal
with an extra cups of water in it (it still tasted good)

We used the turkey bag method last year too. We used the two pots, boil
water in one pot, line the other pot with the turkey bag. Put the food in
the turkey bag, pour in the boiling water, stir and let sit. One trick we
learned on a shake down hike is to carry 2 wooden clothes pins. Pin the
turkey bag open around the top on the pot. This makes it easier to add the
food and water and keeps the bag in place while you are stirring. Twist the
bag closed while it is sitting to keep the heat in and then re-pin the bag
to serve. Works great.
