My crew has been using Tyvek for a dining fly tarp during our preparatory
hikes. I washed it and installed grommets in the same location as standard
tarps (folding over the edge for re-enforcement). It fits nicely into the
small ALPS compression bag along with all the guys and is pretty
lightweight.
It did tear on one grommet once when it was "firmly" tied to the trekking
poles we use as fly poles (instead of the approved PhilFly arrangement). The
fly at that point also was not properly secured and was flapping all night
in stiff winds.
We also use Tyvek ground cloths and have a privacy screen arranged from
Tyvek and trekking poles for a female advisor. And a couple of crew members
have smaller pieces cut as "chair" covers (we use foam floor mats cut in 12.
in by 12 in. pieces as pads for sitting. Makes for a more comfortable perch,
especially when sitting on rocks or damp logs.
