Day hike. It only takes 1/2 day to day hike Trail Peak and will still
leave plenty of time for horses. Even with the new trail, it is still a
good climb and it would be much, MUCH better without your backpack. When
we went to Beaubien on Trek 4, we arrived from Bear Caves on a rainy
afternoon and really did nothing the rest of that day. We did Trail Peak
early the next morning (beating the afternoon storms) and then had the
afternoon off. Then we had our horseback ride early on our departure day,
because it is a fairly easy day to Crooked Creek (via PJ) and there isn't a
LARGE amount of program at Crooked Creek that you need to rush to get to.
We did our Cons work right before you hit Crooked Creek and were still into
camp before dinner. You will want to boogie out of Crooked Creek EARLY on
your departure because you will need to get to Clear Creek and get on the
black powder list ASAP. Many of the afternoon times get "shot" by the
afternoon storms. Of course, all of this is kind of contingent on where
you do your conservation project. YIS. Mike ('76, '02 & '04).

Our fourth day on the trail takes us from Bear Caves Camp to Beaubien where
we'll have a layover day. One of the activities at Beaubien involves
something we're looking forward to, a side hike to Trail Peak.
Since Trail Peak is sort of on the way to Beaubien, does it make sense to
hike Trail Peak with full pack or is it better to go "straight" to Beaubien
and day hike back to it? Looks like Day 5 (our layover day) will involve
horseback riding so time may be limited.
What say you, Philmont veterans?
