I had this same itinerary in 02 and what we did was side hike Trail Peak on our way to Beaubien. We left our packs at the bottom with one of the adults who did not want to make the side hike. Made for a lot of walking but it freed our layover day up.

Subject: [Philmont]: Bear Caves to Beaubien (Trail Peak)
Our fourth day on the trail takes us from Bear Caves Camp to Beaubien where we'll have a layover day. One of the activities at Beaubien involves something we're looking forward to, a side hike to Trail Peak.
Since Trail Peak is sort of on the way to Beaubien, does it make sense to hike Trail Peak with full pack or is it better to go "straight" to Beaubien and day hike back to it? Looks like Day 5 (our layover day) will involve horseback riding so time may be limited.
What say you, Philmont veterans?
