RE: [Philmont]: Bear Caves to Beaubien (Trail Peak)

We did trek 4 in 04. I'll be the voice of dissent.

This was but one day where there were options, more on that below. As with
all decisions this was a crew decision ...they chose to do trail peak on the
way to Beaubien ... initially the night before and confirmed after we'd made
Fowler's Pass ... and that was quite a hump from Crater Lake, especially for
the FOGs. Looking back fowlers was worse than going over Trail Peak and it
gave us a taste of what we would face with Phillips in a couple of days.
Further the down day at beaubien afforded us the opportunity to do the wash,
take a shower, do the cons project and totake part in all that beaubien had
to offer. Also, you may be under the mistaken impression that your horses
will be available to you on a schedule that fits your overall plans ... they
won't. it might well be that if you want to ride that you ride on the
second day at 1pm thus making the side hike a challenge. We got our ride at
9am on the day we were to leave Beaubien ... fortunately its a short walk to
Crooked Creek. Be prepared for being creative in route planning and time
managment.

wrt other options .. On day three (lovers-urraca) consider taking the north
eastern route into Urraca rather than crossing the mesa twice, it isn't
about the climb but about not covering the same ground twice. Besides the
trail up the western side of the mesa is an ugly jeep trail, best covered
only once. Don't miss the opportunity to do Breakfast on top of the mesa,
off the beaten track. On day eight (crooked-clear) consider the trail
through wild horse rather than returning to the trail along Rayado Creek,
although that's a nice walk. On day 11 consider hiking through cito and
aspen springs so that your route takes you through hidden valley and over
window rock. It makes a long day longer, but when the weather is right the
walk and the view can't be beat .... you might catch a view of windoe rock
from the window in the villa upon your return to base camp. Finally, in
what will surelly be an unpopular view, don't eat dinner for lunch on the
way to Tooth Ridge Camp. We ate lunch at Schaffer's pass and saved our
cooked dinner, chili mac, for dinner. We were wet that day, and nothing
beat a warm meal at the end of the day ... we were in the clouds almost all
day ... it was the perfect finish. Check out the pictures off the link
below..

Subject: [Philmont]: Bear Caves to Beaubien (Trail Peak)

Our fourth day on the trail takes us from Bear Caves Camp to Beaubien
where we'll have a layover day. One of the activities at Beaubien involves
something we're looking forward to, a side hike to Trail Peak.

Since Trail Peak is sort of on the way to Beaubien, does it make sense to
hike Trail Peak with full pack or is it better to go "straight" to Beaubien
and day hike back to it? Looks like Day 5 (our layover day) will involve
horseback riding so time may be limited.

  What say you, Philmont veterans?
