RE: [Philmont]: Bear Caves to Beaubien (Trail Peak)

We did Trek 4 last summer and hiked from Bear Caves to Beaubien over Trail
Peak. That was the hardest hike of the trek, in my opinion, especially for a
flatlander. It is quite an elevation change from Bear Caves to Fowler Pass
and then again up to Trail Peak (almost 2000 ft total? I don't recall
exactly...it sure felt like it). Definitely do-able, but the decision should
be left to the crew and can be decided that day even, depending on the
factors at hand.

It was nice to have a "relaxing" day at Beaubien on our layover, but some of
the other advice about doing it as a side hike make sense too. We got to
Beaubien kinda late and got a campsite way up the hill. Our sister crew
came in even later, but the staff must have taken pity on them and gave them
a campsite near the cabin, although next to a crew who thought bear bags
should be on the ground during the day. I'm not sure if the staff ever gave
them back...

I would say do Trail Peak on the way to Beaubien. I took a number of my
Mountain Treks that route, except we usually starated at Crater Lake.

There's a newer trail coming down the Beaubien side of Trail Peak.
Nice easy grade from what I remember. Can't remember if they ever put in a
new trail on the Fowler Pass side of Trail Peak or not. If they haven't, it
is a straight up the side of the mountian trail. Not impossible (as Trail
Peak isn't that high of a peak) but it will get you breathing hard anyway.
