I'd agree with D. Tadsen's note below. By the time we arrived at Beaubien last year, a thunderstrom blew in and the crew was pulled off the Trail Peak hike by the rangers.
I'd suggest getting up early the next day at Beaubien and hike to Trail Peak, then do the horse ride and/or your conservation project. It will be a busy day, but a great one. Be sure to use the tabasco donkeys for a shower at Beaubien.

Having taken that trail before, and doing both options, I would suggest stopping at Crater Lake, participate in their program if you can, then over Fowler Pass and on to Beaubin. Coming "back" to Trail Peak on your layover day.
This allows for additional program and a more "relaxed" climb and visit to Trail Peak.
