I was that Old Man (52) on the crew in reference and when the crew leader asked my opinion I said I didn't want to cover the same ground twice. If we were there we should seize the moment. So Up we went with full packs. Now the part Scott didn't add was that about halfway up I called for a continous caterpillar until we reached the top. At one point as I was passig by one of the athelete's , the scout said to me that it was a really tough climb and he was wondering how I was making it. Of course I said one step at a time. When we reached the top a couple more said that even though they were in shape they didn't realize how hard it was. They were glad that I called the Cat, they were to proud to do it. There's nothing wrong with being a tortise. We always manage to finish the race and sometimes we win.
Trail Peak is a tough Climb but I think Mt. Phillips is harder for Trek 4. Tooth ridge reminded me of the AT in Pennsylvania, full of rocks and boulders without any sembelance of a trail.
Well I have to sign off and go to bed. It's a whole 13 stairs to the second floor. :-))

Subject: RE: [Philmont]: Bear Caves to Beaubien (Trail Peak)
We Did trek 4 last year, and had this same issue based on list discussion and references from previous trekkers.
NUMBER ONE - the crew should decide, and preferably the discussion should be led by the youth. I had my opinion on this option, but it was up to the scouts. We had a few people that I wasn't sure would make it up the "back side" of Trail Peak with their gear. The Crew Leader discussed it, and made the decision. Then we all worked as a team to get our weak scout and our old man up the side.
2. Last year, conservation was scheduled at Beaubien. This took up half of the layover day. I was glad we had already gone over Trail Peak, since there was a lot to do at Beaubien, and not much time, even with a layover.
3. Many people suggest going to Phillips Junction to get your food on the layover day. I don't see any point in this. It is a huge change in elevation and then you have to come back up with the food. We started early that day to be at PJ before it opened. We took showers and washed our socks, and when PJ opened, we had breakfast and packed up.
Thanks,
Scott Sibley
