Had a similar concern in 2000 for the cavalcade. Privately, I asked two
scouts and two adults that were familiar with the candidates the
following:
1. On a scale from 1 to 10, In your opinion, does the hiker want to go
for himself or is somebody pushing or encouraging him?
2. On a scale from 1 to 10, In your opinion, how would you rate the
hiker's ability to take care of himself on the trail (drink water, eat
the food, wash his clothes, not run in camp, remember to wear foot
covering, etc)?
3. On a scale from 1 to 10, In your opinion, how would you rate the
hiker's willingness to do camp chores (set up camp, wash dishes, cook,
etc) and follow the rules of the crew(hiking together, getting in shape,
attending mandatory shakedowns)?
Then the crew was listed according to scores but the scores were not
posted. Everybody agreed with the outcome but not with the method
because they felt that it was done in a back room(I felt that there were
adults that wanted to inject politics into the situation). The four
people asked did not realize why they were rating the crew members.
I would rate all 12 scouts because some of the first six may have had
parents remembering to pay the deposit and as question one indicates,
they are not going because it is their decision.
The three left out would be on the waiting list. In a fair system,
taking a scout simply because their father is going is not a wise
choice. Consequently, there is a potential for adults to drop out.
Our committee chairman was upset when he heard what was done but could
not argue with the fairness of the outcome.
Regarding Eagle Scouts, rank doesn't mean squat at Philmont. My best
crews were the ones that had hikers who wanted to be there and prepared
according.
Just my thoughts,

Subject: [Philmont]: choosing crew
How do you go about choosing your crew? We have planned to take 3
leaders
and 9 scouts. 6 scouts signed up and paid deposits in a reasonable time.
When we declared "last call" 6 more signed contracts and paid their
deposits. So as we see it, we have 6 scouts for 3 slots. All are much
the
same age and rank. All are physically fit and capable of doing the trek.
2
are moving to Michigan this summer but still want to go with their
friends(they have been active and popular with an ASM father).
A suggestion has been made to draw straws, keep the alternates on the
preparation plan and see what happens. I can forsee a couple of
dropouts.
Our last trek in 02, we had to beat the bushes to get the last 2 slots
paid
for at the last minute. So we are good at recruiting extras but not at
turning away anyone. Bad feelings are already developing. Random picking
always seems unfair to me but I think that is just me.
We are trying to get this nailed down this weekend so we can move on.
Advice?
