Philmont does not supply powdered milk. I always bring my own. You can just
use warm water or the gatorade, depends on the tastes of your crew. You'll
find many who just eat it dry, but not me!

Along those lines we have had many discussions on how to make meals, how to
do it quick, how to strip out stuff, etc. I am here to say that we camp
contrary to almost all those ideas. Lets understand that at Philmont you
are either in a Staffed, program camp, or at a trail camp. Now program
camps are worth all the effort to get to and do, early hikes etc, and we do
those. But trail camps have nothing to do once you get there, but do side
hikes, sit and smell the roses, drink in the scenery etc.

Consequently we like to cook! We take a long a fully stocked spice kit, and
I mean stocked. You name it and I probably have some. We dehydrate lots of
stuff like vegetables, onions, carrots, peppers, cole slaw, broccoli slaw,
blueberries, strawberries, apples, etc. We always add a few to the pot to
spice up the meal......

Our favorite is the black beans and rice. To that we add the dried veggies,
onions, peppers, carrots, broccoli, and we carry a large summer sausage to
dice in it! You can dehydrate the pre cut cole slaw and broccoli slaw,
rehydrate and have some vitamins with your meal.

One gent makes homemade buffaloe jerky and we have a great receipe for power
bars. We don't make a lot, but a taste of somthing different is really a
treat. I always make coffee in the am and we usually heat water to make
the oatmeal and add the dried berries and powdered milk to the granola.

Have some fun, cook a bit, experiment. You have all the time you need.
