Our answer:

2001, ended up one short at the last minute. He was added from another
troop a few months before we were to leave and his heart wasn't in it (his
MOTHER was really pushing for it, though). He was certainly physically
capable of making the trek, and even worked together pretty well with the
other members. He hadn't paid any money though, and less than a week before
the crew left he called and said he wasn't going to go. That left us with a
crew of 6 so the others had to pick up the cost for the 7th member.
Frustrating yes, but no worse off than they were before he came along.

2003 - had one extra scout who applied. He was 13 years old, a full two
years younger than the rest and 2nd Class at the time of application in
2001. All the others were 2 years older and Life/Eagle. He was very
overweight, in poor physical condition and showed no signs of attempting to
get into shape to go. He was allowed to be an alternate, but never even
went on the first shakedown trip. It was a no-brainer but we felt it was
better for him to take himself out rather than tell him 'no'. We stayed
with the 12 we were expecting and all was well. The last scout from that
crew will get his Eagle this year. The scout that didn't go moved to
another troop when his family moved, but he's made Star rank now and
hopefully will earn his Eagle before he's 18. He never did get to Philmont,
but sadly he's still in no physical condition to make it.
