The last time our crew was on a high adventure trip was Philmont in
2003. We first decided to do SOME high adventure trip, and left what that
was dependent on what was available. At that time the entire troop, from
11 year olds to 16 year olds were added to the crew. We had about a 2 year
lead time. Our first choice was Philmont, and we got a slot. So now we
had to whittle the group down. Those under age were cut from that crew and
put into a special crew that would do another trip the same week as the
Philmont trek. Next we went by tenure, then rank. In the end we had just
enough slots for those that really wanted to go and were willing to make
most the shakedown hikes.
First come, first serve does not seem fair. (Let me note that I always
tell scouts life is not always fair.) If a scout has a cell phone, he can
call home and ask mom to bring her check book when she picks him up that
night. Maybe a family has not thought a lot about the need for a down
payment before the event is announced and has to take a month or two to
budget for it. First come first serve just seem like those that have money
can jump first in line.
What works for you may not work for others. You have to decide what is
best for the that structure your unit works under. When the crew is
chosen, never let anyone second guess you.
