Not that I disagree with your reasoning, but I would say this is not a good
idea in bear country. The advantage of a crazy creek or similar and a
separate
sleeping pad is that if you use the thermarest conversion, you have a high
likelihood (especially with the boys) they will use it when they eat, spill
on it and turn it into a smellable that goes in the bear bag. Now that
makes
for a bad nights sleep!
So, as much as I like the idea of saving weight, I'm not sure the conversion
is a good idea for Philmont treks. Besides, I used my crazy creek knockoff
to put under my pillow to give me just a bit more neck support, and it sure
made things comfortable (of course, if I use it when eating, that option is
going to go out the window, but for now, it is still clean :-)). I slept
well this
weekend on our prep. Since it was cold weather camping (we were on snow
at 9500 feet), I brought the closed cell pad rather than the thermarest, so
a
conversion wouldn't have worked anyway :-).
