Scott:
There are different trek levels. Typical, Strenuous and Super
Strenuous. If you are able to do a 14 miler, I would think that you would
have no problems at Philmont on a typical trek. Each trek is different and
you can tailor your training to the types of treks your crew is looking at.
As advisors, if all are in similar condition, then you can limit, and will
need to limit the selections to a typical trek. The scouts understand this
for the most part. Also you can agree with the crew that some or all of the
advisors will not carry crew gear or food. Once again most of the scouts
don't have a problem with this and if the crew is a veteran crew they can
handle an extra 5 pounds each with no problems. A typical trek can be as
short as just over 50 miles. If you are really concerned you don't have to
do any side hikes that might add mileage. So you would be looking at about
an average of 5-6 miles per day with a lay over day in the middle to rest.
By the end of the trek you will be in much better shape than at the
beginning.
Your training at 5-6 a day for a couple of consecutive days should tell
the tale though. Find a parking garage to simulate a good slope for some
good up and down training. Or a stadium if you can find one. J

Subject: [Philmont]: How tough is it?
I'm planning my first Philmont trip for next summer ('06). This past
weekend I did about 14 miles (11 miles- day one and 3 miles day 2) along the
Appalachian Trail over very mountainous conditions (Connecticut into
Massachucetts) with a full pack. Although my musceles still ache 3 days
later, I'm more concerned about my knees; which didn't too to well either.
I'm not over-weight. Should I expect Philmont to be as tough, or tougher.
How can I best condition myself, short of a knee replacement, or should I
give up on my dream of Philmont?
