Get some trekking poles, learn how to use them and try again. I think you
will be very pleased with the results. I was.

Subject: [Philmont]: How tough is it?

I'm planning my first Philmont trip for next summer ('06). This past
weekend I did about 14 miles (11 miles- day one and 3 miles day 2) along the
Appalachian Trail over very mountainous conditions (Connecticut into
Massachucetts) with a full pack. Although my musceles still ache 3 days
later, I'm more concerned about my knees; which didn't too to well either.
I'm not over-weight. Should I expect Philmont to be as tough, or tougher.
How can I best condition myself, short of a knee replacement, or should I
give up on my dream of Philmont?
