If you did the section I'm thinking of, through Sages ravine, then I would
call that about average for Philmont.

We did the section from Dalton to the top of Mt Greylock as our last
practice before Philmont in basically one day. That was our third weekend
trip. The first two were in Southern Vermont on the Long Trail. Philmont
was no harder physically than that section of the AT.

If you have done any backpacking in Vermont or New Hampshire, then Philmont
is a piece of cake other than the altitude difference. I had no difficulty
other than getting used to the altitude for the first three or so days. The
rest of the body parts had no problem.

Subject: [Philmont]: How tough is it?

I'm planning my first Philmont trip for next summer ('06). This past
weekend I did about 14 miles (11 miles- day one and 3 miles day 2) along the

Appalachian Trail over very mountainous conditions (Connecticut into
Massachucetts) with a full pack. Although my musceles still ache 3 days
later, I'm more concerned about my knees; which didn't too to well either.
I'm not over-weight. Should I expect Philmont to be as tough, or tougher.
How can I best condition myself, short of a knee replacement, or should I
give up on my dream of Philmont?
