If you go to

http://erg.usgs.gov/isb/pubs/factsheets/fs03501.html

http://rockyweb.cr.usgs.gov/outreach/gps/map_and_compass.html

there is good information on map and compass work with USGS maps.

If you go to

http://www.amazon.com/Expert-Map-Compass-Bj%C3%B6rn-Kjellstr%C3%B6m/dp/customer-reviews/0020292651

you can learn how to get a copy of the classic "Be an expert with map and
compass".

Philmont will never be a walk in the park but if you thoroughly learn how to
navigate with
map and compass you will be in control of where you are.
