Well, since the list is too quiet, I'll slip in some questions that
would be useful to all - First, does anyone know where this year's
Conservation sites will be? (maybe Jim Van Hecke?) That would be very
useful trek planning info, esp. for those of us who are scratching their
heads about alternate activities on dead stretches (that is, 2 or 3 day
periods where the hikes are rather short and the program activities scarce).
Second, can anyone fill us in on the snowpack and/or rainfall in the
Sangre de Cristos lately? We all know that Colorado received very high
snowfalls this year - in fact I believe northwest of Denver got
something like 18 inches about 2 weeks ago - but I haven't seen much
concerning the southern Rockies. My guess is that water will be
plentiful on the Ranch this year - but I'd rather know than guess, and
then end up surprised when I review the board at trek planning.
Finally, has anyone used a SteriPen for water purification? This is a
battery-powered UV lamp that is intended for use inside canteens, and is
supposed to be extremely effective (high freq. UV kills virtually
everything, and quickly too). A neighboring Troop here in Arlington (2
Crews going this summer) has been using them for their practice hikes on
the A.T., and has been pretty pleased with them. Anyone else with
experience or thoughts on these?
Thanks. Maybe these will fire up the List....
