[philmont] Too Quiet

Like Steve, my pack contents were somewhat different from trip to trip as I
tried out new items and discarded others that hadn't worked as well as I'd
hoped. Sounds like you're doing all the right things to get yourself ready.

Speaking from the downhill side of 50, you might consider upping your pack
weight during your training hikes. I found that I could pack pretty light
for myself, but then would acquire extra poundage from scouts that were
having pack or boot problems and needed to lighten up, or surplus from
scouts who couldn't cram another ounce of crew food in their packs, etc. A
pack that felt comfortable at 35 pounds can start pinching or chafing and be
pretty uncomfortable at 45 or 50 pounds, and it's better to know that early
than discover it a Philmont. Also, if you train at 45 pounds and weigh in at
the Welcome Center at 35 pounds, you will in some part offset the additional
challenge you'll experience from the increase in altitude.

My preferences are for the Crazy Creek Sling Chair/recliner (worth every
ounce for me on our 2006 trek) and a mix of soft and hard-sided water
containers - hard-sided for primary drinking container and two crew water
bottles, plus one or two soft-sided to fold up in the pack until needed for
those Big Water days. Others' mileage may vary. Being cheap, I used plastic
seltzer water bottles instead of Nalgenes - pretty durable, easily
identifiable, and my family generates an ample supply of them.

129 on the '08 waiting list and.......waiting.
