We have used both the Steripen and the Aquastar. Both work great. The advantage to the Aquastar is that it is attached to the Nalgene, so there's no extra protective case required. It's size makes it able to treat water in a variety of containers, too, unlike the bigger Steripen. It now comes with the nightlight, too. At $100, it's much less than the Steripen. I like the idea that it was developed as part of a competition to provide the third world with a reliable way to get safe drinking water. They're trying to get to the next step, too- a solar powered one! Like I said, we've used both, but the cost was the deciding factor for me.

Finally, has anyone used a SteriPen for water purification? This is a
battery-powered UV lamp that is intended for use inside canteens, and is
supposed to be extremely effective (high freq. UV kills virtually
everything, and quickly too). A neighboring Troop here in Arlington (2
Crews going this summer) has been using them for their practice hikes on
the A.T., and has been pretty pleased with them. Anyone else with
experience or thoughts on these?
Thanks. Maybe these will fire up the List....
