There's a nice dining fly setup at http://www.troop116.org/philmont/phlDiningFlySetup.pdf, which is the way most of the rangers are going to teach you. This one has a slight difference in the way you stake out the sides as compared to Gary Boyd's reference. I prefer my ridge line to be 36 ft and the side lines to be 18 ft, and will take parachute cord (venetian blind cord) already cut ahead of time to this length, with ends burned/melted to avoid fraying. Can't trust that the fly you check out will have the line on it, and if it is, could be all gnarly and knotted.
A good and highly skilled crew will have all crewmembers knowing how to throw a clove hitch over the end of your index finger very quickly, to slip onto the pole tips. Makes fly setup quick and efficient.
May also need more line for tent guy line tie outs. If you use a Phil tent, there are 14 stakes/tie-outs needed. Again, old line could be gnarly and knotted.

Please note that the Philmont fly set up (see sketch here: http://www.lns.cornell.edu/~seb/philmont-philfly2.png ) requires a 40 foot (and 50' would be fine) and TWO twenty-five foot side sections. Virtually all the Philmont issued flys come with the side guys already attached. It is worth practicing this setup before heading to Cimarron. Practice in the wind and the rain if you can.

>Mine does ? IF the dining fly you are issued does not already have cords attached, cutting one of the 50 lengths in half for the ridge line and the remaining 25 feet in half again for the two side lines will take care of it. The two remaining 50 lengths can then be used ?in a lot of areas? as Pete mentioned.
