Michelle;
First, does your troop have 2-man backpacking tentes that your Nephew can borrow one?
Scoutmasters spend lots of time and 'thunking' trying to get the 'best' tent.
If not here are my 2 picks:
I have spent nights in REI's Half dome $169
http://www.rei.com/online/store/ProductDisplay?storeId=8000&catalogId=40000008000&productId=47943133&parent_category_rn=4500457&cm_re=LS*LS*Half_Dome_HC
If there is an REI in your area, then the advantage of this tent is that they will repair it if something happens. We have 2 of these going on a Philmont trek and our retired Scoutmaster swears by them.
Also, I like Alps Mountaineering gear, they also give a very good discount for the first few purchases from your troop if your troop is not already registered. Their scout shop is kinda of hidden:

If you want the scout price register here -- http://www.scoutdirect.com/ScoutDirectRegistration.htm
our troop is testing a Zephyr 2 (priced at $145 -- scout price at $80 ) found at http://www.alpsmountaineering.com/ALPSMountaineeringZephyr.htm
We have 1 of these going on a Philmont trek.
Now for these tents you still need to purchase a foootprint -- we called then a ground cloth when I was a scout. Or you can make one yourself.
Best of Luck

I'm sure everybody has a favorite tent to take to Philmont. Nephew is going to Philmont in Aug, 2008 with a Council contingent. In order to avoid a huge amount of money going out all at once I'm trying to buy him gear a piece at a time.
Right now I'm pricing tents. Suggestions? Favorites?
Thanks
